1. Sarira Casket: 1300-year-old mystery
Arabian merchants who visited the ancient Kingdom of Silla (BC 1C~AD 935) called it the “Kingdom of Gold”, and the Kamunsa Temple Sarira Casket is perhaps their most famous goldwork.
A sarira reliquary is a work of art that enshrines the remains of Buddha or a Buddhist master.
The Sarira Casket stands just 18cm tall, and there is a wind-chime that weighs 0.04 grams, barely detectable to human senses. The chime hangs from a golden thread thinner than a strand of human hair, and on its surface, when we magnify it by 200 times, there are tiny gold granules that measure barely 0.3mm long.
From these granules to the carvings of expressions on faces smaller than a grain of rice, it still remains a mystery to this day how more than 1,300 years ago, the casket could have been made to such a level of detail.
2. Koryo Buddhist Painting
The Buddhist paintings of the Koryo period (918~1392) have gained an international reputation since their first appearance in the Middle Ages. Today, celebrated museums in the West such as the Guimet Museum, the Museum of Berlin, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, have Koryo Buddhist paintings in their collections.
Acclaimed as “divine artistry” in Asia, the paintings are known for their “infinite labour”, where in one painting, 15,000 miniscule faces of Buddhas were drawn in gold to make a single figure of Buddha.
The painting of the Water Moon Kuanum (Bodhisattva of Compassion) exhibits its own special beauty. The lines of robes are extremely smooth and detailed. No matter how long the line is, it remains constant in width. Bodhisattva Kuanum quietly radiates serenity and compassion, with its head and body surrounded by a mysterious glow, like the moon rising in the night sky. The image reflects the compassion of Bodhisattva Kuanum, who is said to provide comfort to anyone in need of it, just as the moon sheds its light on countless ponds and rivers. It is for this reason that the painting is entitled “Water Moon Kuanum.”
